Chapter 12

There was one thing Katherine hated more than Charlotte, and that was intentionally keeping secrets from someone. Now, she wasn’t talking about good-natured little secrets, like when Colton was going to propose and she helped the poor guy so that it was everything Caroline deserved. Those kinds of secrets were temporary and meant to be eventually revealed, so she didn’t count them as actual secrets. The kind she despised had the potential to do some sort of damage to someone.

For example, her mother hoeing around town the handful of times she deigned to grace them with her presence. If her dad had ever found out, he would have been heartbroken. There was also the time when she’d found out her friend Bonnie had cheated on her boyfriend, or when the uppity one-night stand who didn’t end up screwing her turned out to be her boss’s soon to be brother-in-law. Kat hated those kinds of secrets because she hated having that kind of power to hurt someone. Yet here she was, sitting in the proverbial passenger seat of her best friend's wedding trying to shield the blonde bombshell from the only secret Kat had ever kept from her.

She’d always intended on telling Caroline everything eventually, but since Caroline’s engagement, she’d been more stressed than Kat had ever seen her. There never seemed to be a right time to tell her. The last thing she wanted to do was add another grain to the heaping mountain on the bride-to-be’s shoulders. Sure, they’d talked about the night back in the day, but Kat had always referred to him as Mr. Hugo Boss before he was completely forgotten. Then he waltzed back into her life, and she’d never had a moment to casually make the connection with her friend.

“Oh, hey, remember that guy I left with the night you and Colton became Facebook offish that refused to fuck me? Well, it’s actually Eric, but no worries. Things are fine. We finally banged it out.”

Yeah. That was definitely not what the critically stressed CEO needed to deal with right now. So, Kat decided to put it off till after Caroline had been screwed into satisfaction. Things would be calmer, and Kat could make it the joke it really was. It was the perfect plan, except now it wasn’t so much “tried to fuck”; it was “fucked multiple times throughout your wedding.”

It was just sex after all. It didn’t mean anything.

Again, it’s not like she thought Caroline would care. Caroline was a rational adult (most of the time), but she also liked to be prepared for any scenario. Whether it was rain on her wedding day or several mitigation strategies if things between Eric and Kat went from semi-okay to the worst ever. Those mitigation plans required effort, planning, serious thought, and there were six hundred things needing to be dealt with entirely more important than whoever was in and out of Kat’s bed. All Kat had to do was get through the current evening’s activities, tomorrow’s rehearsal, the bachelor/bachelorette parties, and then the wedding.
